Physics
The Department of Physics was established in 1987 at
old Campus and was subsequently shifted to its newly constructed
buildings at Chehla Bandi Campus in 2003. The studies at the department
of Physics lead to the following degrees.
MSc
M Phil
Ph.D. (To
be offered in near future)
Our teaching and research portfolio has been designed
to meet the future needs of society. The staff of Department consists
of 13 physicists and 10 technical and secretarial members. The M
Sc. Physics is a two year programme with prime objective of providing
a firm grounding in theoretical, observational and experimental foundation
in the field of Physics. Research has been made compulsory and a
medium sized research project is carried out under the supervision
of a teacher. The aim of thesis is to demonstrate the student’s
ability to organize and carry out scientific research.
The courses have been designed to meet the challenging
global demands and are updated in order to equip the students with
skills needed to enter rewarding careers.
The Department has fine teaching laboratories one each
for, Solid State Physics, Electronics, Nuclear Physics, Computational
Physics and general Physics. A well equipped Solid State Nuclear
Track Detectors (SSNTD) laboratory is also available where students
can engage themselves in research. Our research projects involve
collaboration with research and development Organizations in Pakistan.
Apart from teaching laboratories, the Department is
also setting up research laboratories in the fields of Plasma Physics,
Semi Conductor Physics, on-destructive testing reflecting of an enthusiasm
for developing and strengthening the research culture in the University.
There is also a well equipped Workshop associated with the Department,
which is helpful to the researchers when needed. In addition to these
research facilities, the Department has a well stocked library containing
books on physics and related subjects. This Collections Concentrate
on most current teaching and research interests and make available
the background knowledge to those who are interested in making headway
in their respective field of research. The facilities of internet,
teleconferencing, and online library are also available.
The M. Phil programme in the Department was started
in 2004 with the objective to meet the shortage of highly qualified
manpower in the field of Physics by producing graduates with the
capacity to conduct research independently. The Ph.D. programme is
being started in near future.
We take great pride in our postgraduate programme and achievements
of our students which is amply reflected in the success of our students
in various field. Alumni members have donned positions in several
organizations like Nescom, PAEC, KRL, Pakistan Armed forces Education
department, Civil service and various other organization in Pakistan
and abroad. One of the students of this department Mr. Muhammad Muzammal
was conferred the “IZZAZ-E-SABQAT” award while some other
students have won gold medals and awards at national level. One step
taken for international recognition of our degrees is the process
of internship which has been made compulsory at M.Sc level which
will provide valuable experience thereby greatly improving job prospects
on graduating.
In order to facilitate research development a High Tech Central Research
Laboratory is being hosted by the Department. This will provide the
base for research and strengthen the research capability of students
and staff.
