Zoology

The Department is one of the most active in the country with a major emphasis on research and postgraduate education. Zoology is a multidisciplinary subject including the disciplines of Microbiology, Toxicology Biotechnology, Molecular Biology, Environmental Biology, Biodiversity, Genetics and Developmental Biology.

A unique feature of degree programmes is that it represents a balanced blend of the classical and modern trends in the field of Zoology. The programme ranges from taxonomy to Biotechnology. Microbiology is another area of focus in Zoology. Needless to say, Microbiology represents the basic knowledge for any zoological studies; Microbiology influences modern trends hence hold a bright future. Also, the impact of Microbiology on other related fields is immense i.e. agriculture, pollution, food production etc. In short without Microbiology the development in the Zoology knowledge is inconceivable.

Yet another main aspect of the programme is Biotechnology. This is an emerging field and the benefits being derived from these studies are enormous and well recognized. Owing to the fact that this area of Kashmir is rich in wildlife and fisheries, the classical subjects of Biodiversity and Fishery, quite naturally, is one of the main focuses of the programme. Research forms an integral part of the programme. The emphasis stems from the fact that in this field there are yet a great number of phenomena that remain unexplained as yet. Besides animal provides a main source of food, the programme is geared towards research in Zoology.
