Institute of Geology
The Institute of Geology is one of the oldest Institutes
of the University. It was established as Department of Geology in
1973 before the establishment of the University of UAJ&K. The
Institute offers B.S. Applied Geology and M.S. Applied Geology professional
degree programmes. Recently the Institute has expanded its academic/research
horizons by inducting M.Phil. and Ph.D. programmes. B.S. Applied
Geology is a four-year course. The main focus of the programme is
to provide orientation in the field of Applied Geology.
M.S. Applied Geology is two-year professional degree programme. It
involves a year’s course work and one year thesis. The M. Phil.
Geology degree programme includes course work 24 credits, Reading
and Conference /Seminar/Special Assignments, 1-2 credits, and dissertation
26 credits. The Ph.D. Geology programme comprises course
work of 25 credits followed by a dissertation of 80 credits as well
as comprehensive examination (written and oral parts). The course
work can be increased 25-45 credits. The degree Programs are aimed
at providing academically rigorous; research oriented, applied and
vocationally oriented training.
The Institute is unearthing and exploiting the natural resources
the country is blessed with and by doing so is playing an important
role in socio-economic uplift of the country. The Institute also
takes pride in being one of the main sources for feeding to the research
organizations, universities, institutes, national and international
oil companies, geotechnical organizations, atomic energy commission,
WAPDA, PWD, AKMIDC, highways, mining organizations, geological surveys,
industry and thus is fulfilling its responsibility of increasing
the professional and skilled workforce of the country. Our geology
graduates are found in nearly every organization involved in earth
sciences from OGDCL to British Gas Company. Not only are these graduates
working in Azad Kashmir and Pakistan but also many of them have managed
to find places in international organizations.
To boost up the research activities, the Institute has been publishing
its own international research journal ‘Kashmir Journal of
Geology’ since 1983. The Institute has crossed the national
boundaries and has previously collaborated with a number of foreign
universities i.e. Purdue University, USA, Indiana State University,
USA, Zurich Institute of Technology Switzerland, and many national
organizations like Atomic Energy Commission of Pakistan, Geotechnical
Companies, Oil Companies, Geological Survey of Pakistan, Punjab University,
Peshawar University and United States Geological Survey. The
Institute is presently collaborating with Oil Companies, Geotechnical
Organizations, AKMIDC, POL, NIH, Geosciences Laboratories Geological
Survey of Pakistan, Universities and Research Organizations.
It is here at this Institute that Platinum and Gold deposits in Chillas
Kohistan of Northern Pakistan were discovered. It was accomplished
in collaboration with Purdue University, USA. The graduates of the
Institute did their research work in Azad Kashmir, Punjab, N.W.F.P.,
Baluchistan and Northern Areas. The Institute send its graduates
for practical training/internship in geotechnical organizations,
national and international organizations, highways, national and
international oil companies, NIH, KRL, OGTI, hydrocarbon Institutes,
geological surveys, dams, AKMIDC and research Institutes.
The graduates of the Institute completed their M.S. and Ph.D. degree
programmes from U.S.A., Canada and Europe. The Institute is pioneer
in starting M. Phil. and Ph.D. Programmes during 2000-2001 at the
University of Azad Jammu and Kashmir and has produced M.Phil. students.
One of the faculty members completed his Ph.D. thesis and submitted
to the Punjab University. The faculty members of the Institute are
involved in various research projects from Higher Education Commission,
Pakistan Science Foundation and U.A.J.&K. The staff members of
the Institute are also engaged in M. Phil. and Ph.D. studies.
