Horticulture


The subject horticulture deals with the production, improvement and utilization of fruits, vegetables and ornamental plants. Presently horticulture is an important industry. With the foundation of University College of Agriculture at Rawalakot as a sub campus of University of Azad Jammu and Kashmir in 1980, since then Department of Horticulture is playing a key role in study and research. In the Faculty of Agriculture, graduate programme as B.Sc (Hons), major in Horticulture was started with its establishment. In 2004 it has been given a status of full fledge department. Department of  horticulture is the first to start post graduate programme as M.Sc (Hons) classes, long before the establishment of this and other departments that occurred in 2004.

 

The post graduate program was started in 1998 and so far number of students has completed their M.Sc (Hons)/M.Phil degrees from this department. Now Ph.D programme has also been initiated and presently number of graduate, postgraduate and Ph.D students are perusing their degree programmes. Presently there are four Professors, two associate professors and two lecturers. Nine research projects have been completed so far, that have been earned by the Faculty members, from different funding agencies. Two green houses have been installed under Faculty development project, with ample space for the research activities in this department. More than 180 research publications in the journals of international repute are so far in the credit of faculty members of this department
