Plant Breeding and Molecular Genetics
Plant Breeding and Genetics was started as a
major discipline and is contributing in the teaching and research
excellence since then. It was the 1st discipline where
Post-graduate programme leading to PhD was started during the year
2000/1. Presently two PhD students are in the final stages of
their PhD and hopefully they will be awarded degree during the
year 2007/8. Since 1990 the department excelled in research with
start of collaborative research project with ODA/British council
UK and established best laboratory with modern facilities for
biotechnological research. The department has completed four
research projects funded by PSF, ODA, MINFAL, Agri Canda/PARC and
three projects (PSF and HEC) are on going with funding of about 10
million Pak Rupee. The department has dedicated and very well
qualified staff including 4 PhD’s and Post Doc/s in the leading
frontiers of modern genetics. The research capabilities of the
department have been recognized by high standard research
publications nationally and internationally and two members of the
staff have been awarded best researcher and best teacher awards
during the past few years. Similarly the one member has been
awarded a best university teacher award from HEC during the year
2007 and two members of staff had been given prestigious status of
PhD supervisor by the Higher Education Commission Islamabad.
The staff members are engaged in various collaborative
research and teaching programs nationally and internationally.
Presently two collaborative research projects one each with NSW
Australian University and one with Sussex University England are
in process. Nationally the department has collaboration with
various agricultural organizations including UAF, UAAR, PARC,
CEMB, NIBGE, IBGE, Agriculture Deptt. AJK and few NGO’s. The
students of the department are fully exposed to the international
and national collaborators for in situ and ex situ trainings and
technologies for practical application of knowledge and
internship.
Department has good facilities and environment
for conducting the experiments/ Research Projects independently,
leading to M.Phil. and PhD. Programs, although our newly
constructed beautiful building was badly damaged by earthquake of
8th.October-2005 yet the research facilities had been revitalised
in available space for staff and the students. The department have
6 PhD,s and 9 MSc Hons/MPhil students in current semester and 12
new students (4 PhD and 8 MSc Hons.) have been admitted during the
year 2008/9. Similarly the department has about 20+19 Hons.
students in two classes apart from the over 120 students in
introductory courses. Apart from the conventional plant breeding &
Genetics, department also offers courses on biotechnology/genetic
engineering and tissue culture to the students of other
disciplines thus contributing immensely in human resource
development in modern technologies of molecular biology.
