Veterinary and Animal Sciences
The role of livestock in rural economy is critical, with approximately 36 million people located in rural areas engaged in raising livestock
who generate about 30-40 % of their livelihood. The short supply of foods of animal origin, in fact, the presence of large number of
livestock in the country, is indicative of sub-optimal performance of the livestock. Such a situation in turn could be largely attributed
to inadequate need based research and education facilities in the field of Veterinary and Animal science. Despite of the fact, overall
progress in the production potential of the livestock in the country almost appears to be zero. In order to generate skilled man power
for need based research, extension services and development work effective, a comprehensive Programme of animal science education
should be undertaken in the country.
Livestock sector contribute almost 52 percent to the value addition in the agriculture sector, and almost 11.3 percent to Pakistan's GDP and this
is about 62 percent in Azad Jammu and Kashmir, which is higher than the contribution made by the crop sector (47.4 % in agriculture and 10.3 % in GDP).
By contrast, the share of livestock sub-sector in agriculture has gradually increased from 29.8 % to 49.6 % in 1990 to 2005-06, respectively. Livestock has been
the saving grace, as this sector by 8 % as against 2.3 % last year and hence took the overall agriculture to the positive side.
